Hubcaps and Paint to Grab Attention

Great looking wheels or hub caps can add a lot of flash to the look of your car, but don't stop there.  How is the paint holding up?

Sunlight problems from ultra violet are getting worse now

The vanishing Ionisphere caused by air pollution and green house gases means the sun's ultra violet rays are not filered like they once were.  Those UV rays tend to eat up even a good paint job.  You can fight back by applying clear coats, ceramic coatings or just a top notch wax job you car.

Prevent Scratches

Scratches and abrasions are the biggest enemy to your car's finish. Avoiding scratches is one the top secrets to keeping your car's paint in prime condition. Dirt and dust, rubbed in while washing or drying, will act like sandpaper and cut the shine off of your car's paint.  Remember this, anything that comes in contact with your car's finish should be soft.

There is a way the pros judge whether or not a can has been waxed corretly.   They take a watch and whatch for its reflection in the paints shine.  They tilt the sideways and then upside down.  The reflection should look like a movie clip and then a mirror as you spin your watch with no distortion. You should be able to read the time in your paint by the reflection.

Another idea is to use a fluorescent light and see if the paint's surface is smooth and crisp.  Does it have any distored patterns coming off of the paint any direction except directly into your line of sight.

Check The Clear Coat

Just how much clear coat is left to protect your car's paint.  In the auto detailing industry they use little hand held unit to check the number of mils thickness a clear coat has left.  You often can pick them up for a few bucks on eBay.

A good clear coat is 5 mils or more.  Color coats are usually 3-5 mils and primer coats are 1-3 mils.

Here's the problem, minor oxidation can decay paint as much as 1-1.8 mils. Surface scratches can cut through clear coat and half way into color coats  That's when you need a filler wax treatment.

Surface Damage Prevention

Your best bet is to protect your car's finish from the elements. This means storing the car in a garage or under cover.  If you can't do that a car cover is highly recommended. A car that is constantly exposed to sunlight and other environmental hazards will deteriorate quicker and require significantly more cosmetic maintenance.

Great hub caps and great paint.  You and your car will be stopping traffic!
